Mumbai: In a tragic incident during a robbery attempt targeting a doctor couple on a moving train early Wednesday, a 50-year-old Ayurvedic doctor lost part of his left arm while trying to protect his wife. According to the news report, the Victim, Dr. Yogesh Deshmukh, 50, and his wife, Dr. Deepali Deshmukh, 44, both practising physicians, were travelling with their nine-year-old daughter to visit a relative when the horrifying ordeal unfolded between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations.Also Read: Fake Terror probe call tricks retired doctor into losing Rs 2.2 croreThe incident occurred just 15 minutes after the train departed from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) at around 3:35 a.m. The family had boarded coach S-4, and soon after departure, settled in for the overnight journey — Deepali on the middle berth, Yogesh on the upper, and their daughter below. Around 3:50 a.m., while the train was passing between Bhandup and Kanjurmarg, a well-built, unidentified man—believed to be around 6 feet tall—approached her berth and attempted to snatch the bag.Despite being half-asleep, Deepali resisted fiercely, prompting the thief to drag her toward the coach door. Hearing the commotion, Yogesh jumped down and rushed to save his wife. As the train slowed, the robber leapt off with the stolen bag. In the chaos, both Yogesh and Deepali fell onto the tracks.
Tragically, Yogesh’s left arm was crushed under the wheels. Deepali sustained bruises but managed to pull her husband away from the tracks. Speaking to TOI, he said, “I was surprised to find them on a deserted stretch close to the railway tracks. Not many vehicles pass by that stretch. The couple told me they were doctors and had been injured in a railway accident.”According to Jagdale, Yogesh was conscious and was speaking. “His wife appeared to have bandaged his hand, but there was a little bleeding. I rushed them to a private hospital within 15 minutes. Later, after completing my job, I went back to the hospital to check on them,” Jagdale said. Yogesh is in the ICCU and is recovering, reports TOI.
A Government Railway Police (GRP) team has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from LTT and other stations along the route is being examined to identify the assailant.
Speaking to TOI, Police said the couple’s daughter, who continued to be on the train when the incident took place, was deboarded safely at Kalyan station after they and railway authorities were informed of what had happened. GRP officials said the handbag contained less than Rs 5,000 in cash. “We are analysing CCTV footage from LTT to look for the culprit,” said an officer.
