A simple question would have made a world of difference for this routine pediatrician’s visit, had it been asked: “What can we do to make this visit easier for you?” Lauren Schiff, MD, a gynecologic surgeon at the UNC School of Medicine, had brought her then-4-year-old autistic son in for a routine pediatric visit, but her son was having a tough time adjusting to the medical environment.
